  6. Encyclopedia • Large set of books in which many leading scholars contributed articles. • Helped to spread Enlightenment ideas to all educated people around Europe.

  7. Baroque • Dominated the style of art in the 1600s and 1700s. • Elaborate, grand, ornate design

  8. Neoclassical • Artistic style of the late 1700s • Bringing back classical ideas from Greece and Rome

  9. Music • Classical Music emerged • Mozart • Beethoven

  10. Writing • Writing also changed • Everyday language • Entertaining stories • Carefully crafted plots • Suspense • Explored characters’ thoughts and feelings

  11. Enlightenment Despots • Despot means “absolute ruler” • Many thinkers of the period believed monarchs that respected the people was the best government • Rulers who tried to do this became known as Enlightenment Despots

  13. Joseph II of Austria • Legal reforms • Freedom of the press • Freedom of worship • Ended serfdom and ordered peasants be paid cash for their labor
