  2. Discussion Class Involvement Do you feel like you are or have had trouble getting your students involved in class?

  3. Put Yourself in Their Shoes First few classes – What were some of your concerns as a PL and what do you think were some of their concerns as a student? Making a student feel comfortable and important in the classroom It’s all about the little things – EX. remembering their names

  4. Ice Breakers • Some great ice breaker ideas • Big Booty, “Going on Picnic”, 1-2-3-4-5 • Purpose: • Getting them out of their chairs and interacting with others • Getting them out of their comfort zone • Getting them excited

  5. Brainstorming Scenario It’s your first class, 25 kids in a small classroom, like Keene-Flint, how would you conduct the class? Take 3-5 to build a sketch lesson plan!

  6. When you’re having trouble with participation Silences are ok, so be comfortable with them Be consistent throughout the semester when it comes to your expectations of their involvement

  7. Trouble Connecting • Your role as a PL is not only in the classroom • Maybe that extra individual contact and accountability with the student will boost their confidence in the classroom • External factors causing their absence in participation and class involvement

  8. Brainstorming Scenario It’s the middle of the semester and there are two students that are still not engaging in class activities. How would you handle this?

  9. Community Service Project • How many of you have already done this with your class? • This outreaching experience greatly impacts your class dynamic • Highly encourage you guys to schedule it as early as you can!

  10. At the End of the Semester • Those few students that stay uninterested and uninvolved in the class • It is vital that you still give the class some importance to them, how do you do this? • Build those individual bonds with them and make it more meaningful because of the relationship you share with them • Individual accountability

  11. End of Semester.. Acknowledging their progress Remember how hard it is to transition into college

  12. Lack of Engagement Is Not a Reflection of You • Don’t take it personally • We all know that we are in this to help other people and in some way impact their lives.
