  1. Feral Cats Rachael Harvey

  2. Feral Cats • Feral cats • Observed late afternoon and evening of July 30th and 31st , 2009 • Discovery Beach Resort, Cocoa Beach, FL • Habitat is sand dune vegetation and hotel grounds

  3. Cat Hiding from People This cat is hiding under a car in the parking deck. It is waiting for people to leave the area so it could go to the dry cat food pile that the night guard had set out.

  4. Are They Gone? This cat came out from under the car and was headed for the food when I quickly snapped its picture.

  5. Sneaky Cat This cat saw that all of the other cats had left so it slinked over to the pile of food near the curb. It ate quickly and ran back under a car.

  6. Waiting for a Snack This are the seven cats I saw on a regular basis; they are waiting in the grass below the hotel balconies for humans to throw food scraps. The people next to us threw shrimp and caused a major cat fight.

  7. Camouflage Cat This is the underbrush on the sand dunes where the cats take refuge from the humans. I just missed getting a picture that showed the cat darting into this dense foliage.

  8. Summary Slide • Feral cats: want no human contact-only want the food humans provide; are territorial; will fight for food; have one or two dominant cats in the colony; hang out in different places depending on the time of day and amount of human activity. • Taking photos of wild animals is challenging: difficult to get close enough; wild animals are unpredictable and usually afraid of humans; digital cameras work best because bad photos can be deleted and retaken immediately.
