Motivations for CPATH • Fluctuating enrollments • Multidisciplinary nature of field • Industry and workforce needs • Global economy • Rapid pace of innovation and changes to discipline • Multiple pathways to broaden participation • Future ”Grand Challenges” in undergraduate computing education

CPATH • Supports four types of projects: • Community Building (CB) grants; • Evaluation, Adoption, and Extension (EAE) grants; • Transformation (T) grants; and • CISE Distinguished Education Fellow (EDEF) grants. • Estimated number of awards: ($6M in FY07) • 18 to 30 total; • 15-25 CB awards ($50K-$500K up to 3 yrs.); • 1 or 2 EAE awards (up to $900K up to 3 yrs.); • 1 or 2 T awards (up to $1.5M up to 5yrs.); • 1-3 CDEF awards (up to $250K for 2 yrs.).

  10. CPATH Focus This Year • Community building and CDEFprojects • Planning and pilot projects -- few full scale implementations • Seed many promising ideas with competition in the future for full implementation

  11. Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) • Mainly to support Ph.D. students (10-15 Ph.D.’s) • 2-stage competition • Up to $3.1M for 5 years (2 years ago) • No release time for faculty • 8% overhead • No cost-sharing is required • Ken Whang is IIS representative

REU Sites • REU Sites are encouraged to involve students in research who might not otherwise have the opportunity, particularly those from academic institutions where research programs are limited • Projects may be based in a single discipline or academic department, or on interdisciplinary or multi-departmental research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme • Daniel DeMenthon is IIS representative
