What makes a difference?Reading • Reading a little each day - to your child, your child reading to you, enjoy reading! • Read things they enjoy – magazines, sports pages, newspapers • Reading in your environment – TV listings, signposts, shop signs, number plates • Flash cards / matching games to help learn key words and letter sounds • Model reading

  3. Writing • Writing their name • Purposeful writing – shopping lists, invitations, letters, notes • Stationery - Coloured paper, envelopes, post it notes, pens, biros… • Writing needs to be fun • Model writing

  4. Speaking and Listening • Speak lots to your child • Speak and read in your first language • Listen and model correct language • Nursery rhymes, songs, tongue twisters, poems • Games – I spy, rhyming games, blending games

  5. What makes a difference? • Maths • Counting and comparing • Asking how many… how many more…. Difference between… • Numeral recognition • Writing numbers • Talking about shapes • Talking about practical maths • Time ~ telling, talking

  6. Multiplication and division • Learning your tables • Knowing the facts • Family of facts ~ if I know 4 x 5 = 20 then I know 5 x 4 = 20 , also 20 divided by 4 = 5 and 20 divided by 5 = 4 • Knowing the related multiplication and division facts • Knowing the middle of the times tables really well, these are the tricky ones 5x 6x 7x 8x a number children find tricky • You tube has many great ways to learn your tables • Finding rhymes I ate and I ate till I was sick on the floor 8 x 8 = 64 etc • Finding a pattern • Finding what works for your child • Finding time

General • Being active helps children stay focused in class going to the park, ball-games, swings • Talking • Nursery rhymes / songs • Using your first language • Sleep helps children's attention in class – going to bed at 7pm • Limiting computer games, ipad, television • No screens before bed • Being read to, hearing stories, talking about books • Going to the library • Playing games – board games, I-spy, guess what I am?
