  2. Overview Who is Synology? Why wound I want their devices? How does it fit into my business? What else can they do?

  3. Who is Synology? Synology was founded in 2000 by former MS employees Cheen Liao & Phillip Wong. They wrote their original OS built off BSD using Fastora NAS hardware. Since then they have created their own hardware to work with their DSM (Disk Station Manager) software which is the heart of all Synology products. Approx. 250 employees world-wide.

  4. So what do they make? • Synology makes storage devices • Rack Mounted – “RackStation” • Tower / Desk – “DiskStation”

  5. What makes Synology Different? The Software! The Linux based DSM software is the heart of every Synology Product The Community support for Synology products is incredible

  6. What kind of storage are we talking? • SATA Disks (mostly) • Support for Raid 0/1/5/6/10 • Support for SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid) • Based on Linux MD software raid • Support for SSD Caching • Support for Link Aggregation • Lower energy use purpose built (atom/arm)

  7. Why would I want their devices? Do you have a need for ‘cold’ or ‘dead’ storage in excess of a few TB? Do you have a need for a storage back-end for your VM environment? Do you need a way to provide storage to a test lab? NFS/iSCSI/CIFS? Do you have any other random storage needs that don’t need to be on expensive 10k or 15k disks?
