  5. Self-Esteem • Is the way people feel about themselves. • It is a feeling and cannot be directly observed, but reactions from how people behave and react can be noted.

  6. High Self-Esteem • Proud of their accomplishments • Act independently • Assume responsibility easily • Tolerate frustration • Approach new challenges with enthusiasm • Take positive risks • Resist peer pressure • Set and reach goals • Make good decisions • Treat other people with respect

  7. Low Self-Esteem • Avoid situations that evoke fear or anxiety • Demean their own talents • Feel unliked or unwanted. • Blame others for their failures • Are overly influenced by others. • Become easily frustrated • Feel powerless

Tips for building Self-Esteem • Listen closely to what you say about yourself. • Make a list of your strengths or accomplishments. • Take responsibility for what you do. • Speak positively about yourself and others. • Reward yourself when you do well. • Try something new. • Set a goal to improve a weakness.

  9. Tips Continued… • Accept the things you can’t change, and focus your energy on changing the things you can. • Volunteer your time to help someone. • Consider your mistakes learning opportunities.

The Development of Self-Esteem • Self-Concept – a measure of how one views oneself. • Interpreting messages from others – ex: you are fun to be around or you always complain. • Constructive Criticism – good advice on how to improve yourself. • Only you have the power to control your self-esteem.

  11. Improving Your Self-Esteem • Use positive self-talk • Integrity – the characteristics of doing what one know is right. • Acts with integrity • Choose supportive friends • Accept yourself • “Until you accept who you are, you will never be happy with what you have.”

  13. Body Image & Self-Esteem • Self-esteem and body image are intimately connected. • Body image includes the way people view themselves as well as the way others view them.

Assessing Your Self-Esteem • How many of these item describe you? • People generally like me. • I am comfortable talking in class with others. • I like to do new things. • I am popular with people at school or work. • I can depended on . • I often express my views. • I think I am doing OK with my life. • I feel good about what I have accomplished recently.
