  3. Self Esteem • How much you value yourself and your abilities, skills and accomplishments. • You believe setbacks are temporary. • You have confidence to confront challenges and overcome them. • Having good self-esteem will also affect your overall attitude and the health choices you make

Definitions • Self-Esteem- Is a combination of self-image, ideal self, and Pygmalion-self • Self Image: what we perceive ourselves to be Ideal-self: how we want to be • Pygmalion-self: our perception of what we believe other people think of us. • I am not what I think I am • I am not what you think I am • I am what I think you think I am

  5. Activity • What are positive self esteem and body confidence? Think about particular activities, places, time of the day, people etc that make you feel good about yourself and builds your self esteem

  6. Possible Responses • Knowing and liking yourself • Being happy to be you • Accepting your body as it is • Not being self conscious about your body

  7. The reason why we struggle with insecurity is because we compare ourselves with(our behind the scenes VIEW)everyone else's highlight reel

  8. What Affects body confidence • Negative Perceptions of yourself • Oscar winning Angelina Jolie may have it all... But she has said “I struggle with low self esteem all the time. I think everyone does. I have so much wrong with me it is unbelievable”

  9. Who benefits from our imperfection? • GYMS • DIET INDUSTRY • MAKE UP, SKIN CARE, AND PERFUME COMPANIES • PLASTIC SURGERY

  10. ACTIVITY • LOOKING AT THE PICTURES THAT YOU HAVE INFRONT OF YOU THAT DISPLAY WHAT THE MEDIA THINKS IS “TRUE BEAUTY” • IMAGINE YOU LOOK LIKE ONE OF THESE INDIVDUALS • HOW WOULD YOU FEEL? • HOW WOULD YOU NOT FEEL?

  11. Playing with beauty • Barbie® and Ken® – are they just fun-inspiring dolls? • • Barbie’s waist is the same diameter as her head • • Her neck is twice as long as an average humans • • Her legs are 50% longer than her arms. For an average woman they would be around 20% longer.

Ways to improve self esteem • Good Friends • Focus on the positive aspects about yourself • Supportive self-talk • Work toward accomplishments rather than perfection • Mistakes are learning opportunities • Try new activities • Set goals • Exercise regularly • Accept that which you cannot change

  16. Activity • Power of words • Words are extremely powerful. They can stop wars or start wars, build understanding or building barriers. • For each of these scenarios think... • How does this statement make you feel? • What is the person trying to say? • How can this be rephrased?

  21. Definitions • Health “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is the ability to efficiently respond to challenges (stressors) and effectively restore and sustain a "state of balance" • Mental Health This is a state of emotional and psychological well-being in which an individual is able to use his or her cognitive and emotional capabilities, function in society, and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life.

  22. Definitions • Physical Health Physical fitness is a general state of good physical health. Physical fitness is usually the result of regular physical activity and proper nutrition. • Emotional Health The ability to express all emotions appropriately, and to maintain a balance of emotions so that negative emotions such as depression, stress, anxiety, fear and anger are not dominant.
