  1. SITTC Report, Apr 23rd 2003 Dr Richard Mitchell • Computing Policy and Resources • Machines for Staff • Email and Web • New network core to SSE • Equipment for 3+3+3 • Budget • CAVE • Building work and Lift?

  2. Computers for Staff Uni Policy – basic machine, max 5 years old ITNG recommend for SSE – max 3 years In meeting with HODs etc., felt to be a luxury, given new equipment needs, if a) have 2 ‘spare’ machines b) all machines backed up each day c) considered replacing motherboards So replace all 5 year old machines – SITTC providing ‘standard’ PC – anyone wanting different machine to fund cost difference

  3. Email and Web • ITNG feel ITS ought to manage all email • Frees up ITNG resource • But, ‘cyber’, ‘csres’ domains to go • All new staff email of form f.bloggs@rdg.ac.uk • Web servers, however, should remain under SSE – to provide flexibility, though we need to follow Uni policy. • It is hoped that the School and CS web pages can be improved.

  4. Network Core to School • ITS are to install a new network core to the school – allow better School network • Possible problem: ITS may want to manage our network. ITNG negotiating. Payment ITNG have no facilities for handling cash, so they suggest that payment for printing and cardkey replacement should be through the School Information Office.

  5. Equipment and 3+3+3 • 3+3+3 has allowed Cyb and EE to rearrange Part 1 labs, so the practicals done are determined by the modules taken by the students not their degree. • SITTC has funded the additional and replacement equipment to allow this. • Next year, we will do the same for Part 2. • The new Part 1 labs went remarkably well.

  6. Budget • As per GMM’s new system, SITTC has submitted a budget for 2003/4. • Based on requirements from Depts, ITNG ... • So as to generate a sensible budget, the ‘requirements’ have been reduced. • At next SITTC meeting (May 27th) we will generate a prioritised ‘wish list’ – so keep your dept reps aware of requirements.

  7. This year’s budget • Budget: ~£185K (including contingencies) • Spend: ~£130K • So: ~£55K to spend, on last years wish list? • But, only £100K in the account! CAVE • One item we spent: a new uninterruptable power supply for CAVE – without it the CAVE would probably have had to stop.

  8. Building Work and Lift? • Air cooling and lighting upgrades in various computing labs • Main computer room expanded • Allow consolidation of satellite machine rooms • Allow further expansion • There may be a lift in building – probably from corner of Cyb Teaching Lab, up into 166 (machine room in Cyb).
