  3. Welcome Students History 153: Hawai’i and the World A history of Hawai’i from the earliest times through the reign of Kamehameha within the context of world history

  4. Course Objectives • DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS IN BOTH ORAL AND WRITTEN FORMATS • RECOGNIZE AND EXPLAIN SOCIO-CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PATTERNS OF EARLY WORLD CULTURES DRAWING SPECIFIC CONCLUSIONS RELATED TO HAWAII. • DISCERN THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES AMONG EARLY WORLD CULTURES AND IDENTIFY THEIR INFLUENCES IN HAWAII. • COMPARE AND CONTRAST EARLY WORLD RELIGIONS IN EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA AND THE MIDDLE EAST, THE AMERICAS, HAWAII AND THE PACIFIC

  5. Course ObjectivesINTERPRET THE ROLE OF WORLD GEOGRAPHICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN SHAPING EARLY HUMAN EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES DRAWING SPECIFIC CONCLUSIONS RELATED TO HAWAII AND THE PACIFIC. RECOGNIZE THE INTERDISCIPLINARY INFLUENCES AFFECTING EARLY ARTISTIC FORMS AND INTERPRET THEIR IMPACT ON CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN HAWAII. IDENTIFY THE CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF COOPERATION, COMPETITION AND STRIFE WITHIN AND AMONG EARLY WORLD CULTURES DRAWING SPECIFIC CONCLUSIONS RELATED TO HAWAII.

  8. Course Information • THIS IS AN EIGHT WEEK COURSE WHICH WILL REQUIRE  THE SAME AMOUNT OF WORK EXPECTED IN A 16 WEEK COURSE IN AN ACCELERATED FORMAT. BY REGISTERING AND ATTENDING THIS COURSE STUDENTS ACKNOWLEDGE THIS ACCELERATED FORMAT AND THE WORKLOAD REQUIREMENTS WHICH MAY BE STRESSFUL. • BECAUSE THIS IS AN 8 WEEK COURSE ATTENDANCE IS VERY IMPORTANT AND STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND EACH CLASS MEETING FROM 12-2:50 • This is a student centered course that requires consistent student participation in both small and large group situations. Please attend class ready to discuss assigned reading and research assignments. • All work must be done on time and ready at the start of class to receive full credit.

  9. Please bring assigned reading and research material to class for class participation activities which is part of you grade. • Please turn off your pagers and cell phones in class.

  10. Exams • Exams are based on assigned readings, lectures and class participation material • Exams are online , open note with a study guide. Books not allowed during tests • Exams are multiple choice taken during class time in the testing center • If you read, take notes, listen and study you will get a high score on these exams

  11. Class Participation: • Short research, writing and discussion activities • Based on assigned course topics • Bring in a typed or hand written (legible) fully developed answer to assigned question • Must be ready at the start of class to share in small groups
