Language Arts: • Literacy Centers (ex.: Research, Word Work, Writing, Skill of the Week, Partner Reading) • Guided Reading/Independent Reading Special (1:55 – 2:40) Snack Science/Social Studies Pack up/Dismissal Monday – Music Tuesday – Art Wednesday – Science Thursday – Technology Friday – P.E. (Library circulation @ 9:30 Friday mornings)

  6. Language Arts: “Big Ideas” • Summarizing the key details of stories, dramas, poems, and nonfiction • Identifying and judging evidence that author’s use to change the reader’s point of view • Integrating information from print and digital sources to answer questions and solve problems

  7. Language Arts: “Big Ideas”(continued) • Writing opinions that offer reasoned argument and provide facts and examples • Coming to classroom discussions prepared and engaging fully and thoughtfully with others • Building knowledge of academic words

Math: Content Standards Instructional time will focus on three critical areas: • Developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and division of fractions in limited cases. • Extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations. • Developing understanding of volume.

Math, continued… Standards for Mathematical Practice include: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

  10. Science • Inquiry-based • Note-taking emphasized • Students are encouraged to review science notes/vocabulary on a regular basis Areas of Focus: • Investigation Weather Systems • Ecosystems • Human Body Systems • Motion & Design

  11. Social Studies Five strands include: • History • Geography and Environmental Literacy • Civics and Government • Culture • Economics and Personal Financial Literacy

  12. Homework • Homework is a “work in progress”…meaning it counts for completion and effort! It is meant to: • Enrich and extend school experiences through related home activities • Reinforce learning by providing practice and application • Stimulate effort, independence, responsibility and self-direction • “No Homework Binder” • Any time a student does not have homework completed or in class, he/she records the date, assignment, and the reason. • Oops…“I forgot!” • No “I forgots”AND homework completed on time all quarter = Reward!

Homework, continued: Homework will (mostly) be assigned Monday - Thursday: • Must be copied each morningfrom the board in the agenda completelyand neatly. • Agenda must be signed each day by a parent/guardian. • Students will be assigned 30 minutes of independent reading each day. (Daily reading log must be SIGNED and handed in every week.) • Occasional weekend homework for project work or to complete unfinished work/make-up work • All homework must be made up during absences from school
