  2. ANA LEADING THE WAY: In 1964, first health care organization to endorse Medicare In 1991, ANA in collaboration with many other nursing organizations develops Nursing’s Agenda for Health Care Reform This blueprint for reform was ultimately endorsed by 60 nursing and health care organizations

  3. Nursing at the Table ….

  4. ANA and SCOTUS In March 2012, as SCOTUS was hearing oral arguments on the constitutionality of the ACA, ANA members and staff were demonstrating on the steps of the courthouse in support of the law. Other ANA activities included: online, daily analysis of the court proceedings; a Twitter chat with nurses nationwide; numerous media interviews. Concerned that the entire or parts of the ACA would be struck down, ANA worked to implement critical aspects of the law aimed at patient safety and quality and primary and preventive care services.

  7. REPEAL OF THE ACA WOULD RESULT IN: 6.6 M young adults losing the option of being insured under their parents’ health plans 129 M individuals, including 17 M children, again being denied insurance or charged higher rates due to pre-existing conditions Medicare participants losing the 50% discount on trade name drugs after hitting the “donut hole” 32.5 M Medicare participants paying more for preventive services, currently free under the ACA 67,000 individuals insured under the ACA’s Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan becoming uninsured again

  8. What’s at Stake for Michigan Families • Many privately insured residents (almost 6 million) would once again be vulnerable to lifetime limits • Young adults (nearly 33,000) would lose insurance coverage through their parents’ health plans • Many privately insured residents could lose their insurance when they need it the most because of application technicalities “found” by the insurance companies as the insurers' usage experiences rise • Many seniors return to higher prescription drug costs as the “donut hole” would continue
