  2. Cinematography…! • So, what did I gather about this subject after watching that video about it? Well. • Basically, cinematography is that art of making footage look good. Like a moving photo, if that makes any sense. This all includes the lighting of a scene (as in natural light or artificial), the amount of shadow within a scene, the colours used within a scene (and what they mean or represent, if anything) and the camera angles and shots. • How I’m going to use these rules within my piece – hmm. For the actual interview scenes, I’m going to place both my characters in front of a window (natural light). I’m going to do this because I want to capture their silhouettes, with very few facial features. I’m going to do this because I want to make my characters ‘less human’ in certain scenes – for instance, when Blair vomits – non of her facial features will be seen, only her side profile as she yells at Tristan. I’m also going to fade the colour, to again add a dream-like feel. As for the POV scenes, these will work much more with vibrant colour and sharp lighting, in order to give the scenes an almost cartoon-like feel, making them slightly warped.

  5. That river bloke – Marcel Dinahet Posted: June 14, 2011 in Uncategorized 0 So, went with the dear Film and Video troupe to see the new gallery of Marcel Dinahet’s work – rivers, in case you didn’t guess from the title. Overall, I thought it was quite good. Even though I’ve only just learnt about Art Videos (sure, I knew about using videos as an art form, but for some odd reason it never occurred that it would be a category), it did kind of deliver a meaning/feeling to me. It all felt tranquil and minimalist on one hand – perhaps an attempt at a kind of more modern art? I also thought that it could all be about viewing in general – most of the time, when you see a river, it’s from the surface, looking over – you can’t see what lies beneath. But with the various pieces, it makes it almost seem as if it’s a water creature viewing the surface, so a reverse. I know quite a few people expressed that they didn’t like the colours used (the water was dirty, and so on), but if anything, I think that it made it even more likeable as a piece. The way the light hit a particular surface, which was covered with bubbles – it almost made it look like crystal. Also on an at first almost boring scene – when you notice how the light hits the bubbles caught on reeds here and there, it made it quite beautiful – well, at least I thought so. If I have to pick a favourite, it would have to be number 11, or Canal 3. Even though number 8 (Sky 1) did interest me quite a lot, being from the viewpoint of being under the actual water, 11 just seemed really beautiful to me. The way the shadows hit the water, the way it was all so calm – and the quality of the video was brilliant. Even though nothing was really happening within it, I just found it really wonderful to look at. So, overall, I quite liked the collection. • That river bloke – Marcel Dinahet • So, went with the dear Film and Video troupe to see the new gallery of Marcel Dinahet’s work – rivers, in case you didn’t guess from the title. • Overall, I thought it was quite good.
