  2. What kind of Sound do you want? • Realistic sound? • Several options available • Quantum Sound Industries on board sound • QSI Revolution • Soundtrax • LOK SOUND • Digitrax • MRC

  3. Equipment Needed!! • DCC system • Digitrax, NCE, LOK, MRC, etc. • Locomotive • Controllers that can range upto 20 sound functions

  4. Recording Sound • Digital Recorder • Recorder on devices like Apple’s IPOD, or Blackberry Devices will work • Recommended – Sony or Panasonic

  5. Software • Audacity • Free • Edits • Compresses • Works with Wav and MP3 formatted files The cleaner the audio, the better the sound, clarity and quality are key to sound files!!

  6. What do I want to record?? • Well Anything!! • Engineers and brakemen yelling • Dispatcher audio if you have a scanner • Brake sequels • Locomotives • Crews • Hotbox detectors • Freight car coupler smashes

  7. What Decoder is best for me? • How much do you want to spend • Range from $60 to $150 • What options do I want? • Capacity, functions, space, etc. • Customer Support is key • Several companies are very good when it comes to defective sound issues, others have issues.

  8. Getting the Most of the Decoder!! • Use all functions • Fill all sound slots • Maximize decoder memory capacity • Other functions available • Research or contact the manufacturer • For example Lok Sound allows axle camming

  9. Installation of Decoder • Most decoders will require some milling, either for a speaker cavity or remove weight for the decoder in the shell • For speaker cavities • Place in the fuel tank if applicable or near the rear of the loco to allow the best sound to me disbursed • Remember if you take weight away, you replace weight!! • Cover the speaker in panty house with 2 layers to prevent metal fragments from getting into to the magnetic speaker • An example is upfront
