  6. Other notes: • US subs also have some generators operating at approx. 400Hz • (Hz = cycles per second) • Russian & Chinese subs also have equipment operating at approx. 300Hz.

  7. Sonar Analysis

General characteristics • If the amplitude varies, it’s a product of sinusoids. • The sinusoid with the larger period gives an envelope curve that encloses the entire wave. • (Assume for now that one of the components has amplitude = 1.) • If the sinusoidal axis varies, it’s a sum of sinusoids. • The sinusoid with the larger period gives the (varying) sinusoidal axis.

  9. General procedure • Determine if it’s a product or sum. • Find the period & amplitude of the larger component. • Sketch the envelope or axis curve. • Find the period & amplitude of the smaller component. • It helps to count the number of smaller component’s cycles in one cycle of the larger curve. • Write separate and combined equations.
