  1. REPARATIONS - After WWI Germany agreed to peace at the Treaty of Versailles. Since Germany was on the losing end, they had to accept harsh terms. The Allies made them pay $33 billion for damages they caused by invading France.

  2. Woodrow Wilson • Wanted to avoid involvement in WWI, he kept America Neutral until 1917 when the U.S. entered the war on the side of the Allies. • He desired to form a “League of Nations” to help prevent any more wars. He did not succeed.

  3. U-boats sink the Lusitania • British passenger ship full of civilians including 128 Americans killed by German U-boat. • Influenced America to join the war.

  4. Bolsheviks • Communist group who took over power in Russia replacing the Emperor or the Tsar. • Vladimir Lenin

  5. THE RED SCARE • Americans angry at Germany for provoking war. • Communist Bolsheviks take control of Russia and withdraw • from the war. • -American anger expands from Germany to Communist • Russia for leaving the war. • Communism = disloyalty and unpatriotic. • The Palmer Raids – “General Intelligence Division” – “FBI” • -Conducted raids on suspected Revolutionaries.
