  2. Creating a Sub-Community Go to the Community where the Sub-Community will be created and click the My Communities dropdown in the upper right corner. Select Edit this Community.

  7. Creating a Sub-Community On the next screen, click the “OK” button in the upper right corner. The popup window will then close. Do Not un-check the checkbox to ‘Inherit the Template’.

  8. Creating a Sub-Community Click on the ‘Properties and Names’ menu link on the left side navigation. Enter a name and description.

  9. Creating a Sub-Community Make a note of the ‘Object ID’ field. This number is needed when creating your Left Navigation portlet. The object id in this example is 3793.

  10. Creating a Sub-Community NOTE: Object IDs allow the portal to find objects even if you rename them or move them into different folders.

  11. Creating a Sub-Community Note the Sort Order property at the bottom. This field is used to specify the order in which you want your communities to display in the left navigation. The community to be at the top of the navigation portlet should be the lowest number. If you are going to use the Sort Order it is recommended that you assign these values in sets of 10. These values can be changed at any time.

  12. Creating a Sub-Community On the top right, click “Finish”. By default, the save screen will choose the folder in which the community was created.

  13. Creating a Sub-Community There is one last step. Click the “Security” tab at the top of the screen.

  14. Creating a Sub-Community This is the Security screen that displays the Access Control List (ACL) settings for this community. When you create any portal object, it will automatically inherit the ACL of its containing object. In this case, the containing object was the Agency Name Communities folder.

  15. Creating a Sub-Community Your user object (name) should appear at the bottom of the list. Since you are already a member of the Community Managers group, you generally don’t need to also be included as a separate user with Admin access. As a result, it is a best practice to remove yourself. This is true of creating any object.

Refer to “Security Privileges and Mandatory Settings” for more information on the four privileges and their effects as well as the purpose of the Mandatory column, which only appears for communities.

  20. Creating a Sub-Community The Sub-Community has been created. Note: A community must also have a Home Page in order to be viewed. Without the Home Page the user will get an error stating that they don’t have permissions or that the page does not exist.
