Learning Objectives • Learn what is expected of YOU, students, by familiarizing yourself with the primary areas of focus in the “WHS Student Behavior Expectations Guide 19-20” • Understand how YOU, students, can help to create a safe and welcoming school climate and learning environment at Wilson
WHS Student Behavior Expectations Guide 19-20 For today’s Classroom Climate Lesson students will need: • A copy of the “WHS Student Behavior Expectations Guide 19-20” • The following hand-outs: • “WHS Student Behavior Expectations” graphic organizer • “Key Ideas” graphic organizer • The graphic organizer where students can record what we like about each poster and what could have been done differently on the poster to enhance the message. • Exit Ticket • 1 sheet of Butcher Paper and Markers per group of 4-5 students. (flex group size depending upon class size)
Primary policies of focus for Classroom Climate Lesson #1 For today’s Classroom Climate Lesson we will focus on the following 6 school-wide policies and corresponding student behavior expectations: • Speech and Language • Hall Passes • Personal Electronics • Attendance • Drugs, Alcohol, and Prohibited Items • Bullying/Harassment
Steps for Activity - Make Smaller Groups with Roles • Let’s form groups of 4-5 students • Each group needs to have the following roles: • Facilitator – responsible for keeping the group focused and moving through the tasks • Recorder – responsible for filling out handout, making sure all points are included on poster • Timekeeper – responsible for helping the group keep up a good pace to complete all the tasks, monitors time to make sure the group is able to finish on time • Participants – responsible for actively helping to complete all tasks in the group, and responsible for presenting the poster to the class
Steps for Activity - Assign each group a policy to analyze and make a visualization (poster) After each group has one of the six policies to analyze, then: • Read the policy in the “WHS Student Behavior Expectations Guide 19-20” • Use the graphic organizer (hand out) titled “WHS Student Behavior Expectations” to record your analysis. • Use the “Key Ideas” grahpic organizer (hand out) to brainstorm what your poster should look like. • CREATE the POSTER which symbolizes the most relevant points made by the policy that students need to know.
STEPS for ACTivity - approximately 20 minutes • Please create your poster and hang it up on the wall (15-20 minutes) • Be prepared to share the meaning of your poster. (5-10 min) • Gallery Walk: (5-10 min) • Take the graphic organizer (hand out) where you can record what you like about the poster and what the group could have done differently to enhance the message. • As you quietly walk around the room and look at posters, please make some notes on the graphic organizer.
Steps for Activity - Questions and Exit ticket • Please keep the “WHS Student Behavior Expectations Guide 19-20” in a binder or a folder. You can keep it at home or in a binder/folder you carry to school. • IF TIME: What questions do you have and discuss as a class. • Please fill out the “Exit Ticket” (hand out) and write questions or comments on the back side of the Exit Ticket. • Turn the Exit Ticket into your teacher.
