  1. Electricity & Magnetism 5th grade Science

  2. Georgia Performance Standards • S5P3 Students will investigate electricity, magnetism, and their relationship. • a. Investigate static electricity. • b. Determine the necessary components for completing an electric circuit. • c. Investigate common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity. • d. Compare a bar magnet to an electromagnet.

  3. Matter • What is matter? anything that has mass and takes up space the quantity of matter in anobject What is mass? the building blocks of matter, atoms are the tiniest particles of any material What are atoms?

  4. Let’s explore the structure and characteristics of atoms! • http://www.thetech.org/exhibits/online/topics/51a.html Let’s click on the link below to learn more about atoms. If you still want to learn more click on the following link. http://education.jlab.org/atomtour/whatareatoms.html l Use these websites to answer the, Introducing Atoms handout.

  5. Let’s Review the Structure and Characteristics of Atoms! 1. The three particles of an atom are… protons, neutrons, and electrons. 2. What are the charges of atomic particles? Protons (+) , Electrons (-), Neutrons (no charge) 3. What does the structure of an atom look like?

  6. A Hair-raising Experience! • Now that you know a little bit about the structure and characteristics of atoms we can better understand how static electricity works. Click Now try explaining static electricity in your own words with a partner.

  7. Let’s Review Static Electricity! • Static electricity occurs when… an electrical charge builds on the surface of a material due to the object losing or gaining electrons. repel ( push apart) Objects with a similar charge ______________ each other. attract (pull together) Objects with opposite charges _____________ each other. Static means “staying still” or “nonmoving.”

  8. Static Electricity & Lightning • Interesting Facts: Lightning strikes the earth about 100 times every second. One lightning bolt could power a 100 watt light bulb for three months. An ordinary piece of steel will become magnetized if struck by lightning Can you guess where the lightning capital of the world is? Kakadu, Australia Click the links below to learn more about lightning! http://www.school-for-champions.com/science/staticspark.htm http://thunder.msfc.nasa.gov/primer/index.html

  9. Electric Circuits electric current What is an electric circuit? A/An ______________ is a flow of electrically charged particles. a path along which electrons flow What are the two types of electric circuits? Series & Parallel Click on the light bulb to learn about the two types of circuits. Want to Play? http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/revisewise/science/physical/11_act.shtml

  10. Insulators & Conductors Materials or object that an electric current can flow through is called a/an _____________. conductor Material or object that an electric current cannot flow through is called a/an ____________ . insulator

  11. Bar Magnets & Electromagnets Electromagnets ___________ are temporary magnets made by passing an electric current through a wire coiled around an iron bar. http://www.school-for-champions.com/science/magnets.htm http://www.science-tech.nmstc.ca/english/schoolzone/Info_Magnets.cfm Bar magnets ________ are magnets in the form of a bar With magnetic poles at each end.
