  1. NRENs10 years from now…Learning from the Pastto Guess the Future… Claudio Allocchio

  2. About 20 years ago… We created roads for Research and Education • Because we all needed something “different” • … and we will continue to create them, because we are the only one who can “make it right” for us. • “Services” were pure User’s business, and the network a “black box” for them • Now it looks somehow differently. Claudio Allocchio

  3. About 10 years ago… Roads turned into highways, and some users opened the black box • Fibers made a dramatic change • We did not guess this 10 years before, but we got somehow biased, that dramatic changes will constantly come… • Priority, BoD, VPNs, we gave Users some control • But “services” were still user’s business Claudio Allocchio

  4. Here we are in 2011… NRENs: the last “N” is changing a lot… • The highway is granted, but not such a “dramatic change” happened this time • We host more new communities, services, applications, people and ideas, real and virtual, we cope with new requirements • The NREN is a support and training center for users • New communities ask and create services, and support in building them Claudio Allocchio

  5. 2020… Network? What does Network mean? What about Data and tools to handle them! • The Network for research and education becomes transparent, faster, and ubiquitous • Peerings and roaming agreements, access technologies blend. • Users just “connect” to their data, resources and tools • NRENs still build innovation in networking technology • It is our business model which permits it Claudio Allocchio

  6. 2020… (cont’d) Human and Knowledge networks • Users’ communities ask for interdisciplinary (networking) skills • NRENs services brings them together • “networking the researches” bottom-up because they drive on the same highway • Collaborative environments and tools • Will our current stuff just look “primitive”? Claudio Allocchio

  7. 2020… (cont’d) And of course many other things… • How many nonsenses are in my previous forecast slides? Claudio Allocchio
