Storage • Storage, or mass storage, is the ways a computer system can store software and data. • Storage relies on storage media and storage devices. • Storage media includes hard disks, floppy disks, flash drives, CDs, and DVDs. • Storage device is a computer hardware that is capable of retaining data even when the electrical power is turned off. • They are the devices that enable the disks to operate.

  3. Storage vs. Memory • Storage devices save data even when the electricity gets shut off. • Storage is cheaper than memory • Storage plays a role in starting up your computer. • Storage devices are needed for outputs.

Hard Disk Drives • High capacity, high speed storage device • Usually consists of several fixed, rapidly rotating disks called platters. • Operating system records a table of information on disk which includes the file name and location on the disk. • Each track is divided into pie-shaped wedges called sectors.

  6. Other types of Storage • Network attached storage-comprised of hard drives and other media used for data storage. Attached to a network. • Remote Storage-storage space on the server that is accessible from the internet. • Flash Drives-uses solid-state circuitry and has no moving parts. Problems with long-term storage • Due to the fast rate that technology has been advancing, long term storage can become more of a problem. • Some of the old long-term storage devices might not be compatible with the new technology that continues to come out every year due to changes in formatting.
