Safety Concerns • Operating dump/roll off type vehicles on uneven terrain increases the chance of rollovers • Longer trailers are at a higher risk of rollover during operations • Primary hazard is related to the stability of the unit when the box is in the raised position • Shifting materials and change in center of gravity can both create dangerous situations: Always be cautious!

  4. Even a slight slope can be enough to cause tipping, especially if materials shift or stick inside the box. A little tilt, a lot of risk!

  5. Factors That Affect Stability • Broken or bent leaf springs • Improperly loaded container or box • Uneven surface when dumping • Materials stuck in box • Rear wheels settle unevenly or are improperly inflated • Excessive wind speed

  6. Tip-Over Prevention • Monitor loading to ensure even displacement • When unloading be aware that some material comes out faster/slower than others. Raise slowly, and watch and listen for movement. Let load push you out from under it • Be aware of uneven surfaces (these areas present the greatest risk of tipping) • Maintain accurate tire pressures for all tires • Always perform proper pre-trip inspection

  7. Pretreat trailer/box before loading! • When available use calcium chloride or salt to pretreat trailer/box before loading. This will help to keep load from freezing up over night if it is a pre-load, and help it from freezing up in transit.
