Fruits of Repentance “Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance:” Matthew 3:8 ASV (ESV) “Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.” Acts 26:20 ASV “but declared both to them of Damascus first and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judaea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.”

  2. Defining Repentance It is not: Conviction of Sin ~ Agrippa ~ Acts 26:28 Fear ~ Felix ~ Acts 24:24 Sorrow ~ Judas ~ Matt. 27:3 It means: Two Greek words “after” & “mind” Change our mind after learning we are wrong Give up sin and live a righteous life

Defining Repentance Illustration - Matt. 21:28-29 “…A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard. 29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went. Repentance is a change of will produced by godly sorrow that leads to reformation.

  4. “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.” 2 Cor. 7:10

  6. Importance of Repentance • Part of the Plan of Salvation • Preceded by Faith - Heb. 11:6 • Followed by Confession - Rom. 10:9-10 • Followed by Baptism - Acts 2:38

  7. Importance of Repentance • It is a way of Life • A changed attitude toward Sin • Keep on turning away from sin • Christians who sin must repent • 1 John 1:7-2:2 - Acts 8:5-24 • Repent + Confess + Pray Sin + Time does not equal forgivness S + T = F

Chastity Stingy …………………………………… Liberal Liar ……………………………………… Truthful Thief…………………………………….. Restores Hypocrite ………………………………. Sincere Hatred …………………………………. Love “every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.” Matt. 3:10

The Fruits of Repentance Divorce and Remarriage “And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.” Matt. 19:9 Person in an unscriptural marriage They want to become a Christian What Must They do ?

The Fruits of Repentance Divorce and Remarriage • Repentance is required • Change of mind about sin that results in a change of life! • Can no longer live in adultery - must cease all sin • Matt. 14:4 “Not lawful for thee to have her” • Does baptism not wash away all sin ? • It must be preceded by repentance • Fruits of repentance is to quit all sin • What about a homosexual couple ???

  12. The Fruits of Repentance Some do not want to bring forth fruits of repentance We will let God settle this on the day of Judgment! God has already settled it. We must read and obey what God has commanded

  13. Fruits of Repentance “If you love me, keep my commandments” Jn. 14:15 Repentance is a change of mind about sin which results in a change of our life. We are no longer going to live in sin ! We are going to bring forth fruits of repentance Our life will demonstrate that we have repented !
