Introduction • As many as 70 million people died, and much of Europe and Asia lay in ruins. • Germany, Italy, and Japan were occupied and turned into democratic nations. • Some estimates place the cost of the war at more than $2 trillion. • Although the US had the bulk of the allied costs in war, it didn’t have the destruction of the other Allied and Axis powers.

The United Nations • Churchill and Roosevelt decided to launch a new peace-keeping organization in 1945, the United Nations. • The UN Charter says its purpose is to maintain peace in the world, while encouraging friendship and cooperation. • Members agree to give up the use of force, except in self-defense.

The United Nations • The UN also seeks to eliminate hunger, disease, and ignorance. • The UN has a Security Council, made up of the leading powers, responsible for ensuring peace and deterring aggression. • The Security Council can apply economic sanctions or use military power to resolve disputes. • The General Assembly includes all member nations and makes recommendations to the Security Council.
