  2. Casablanca • January, 1943 • FDR and Churchill met to plan the next phase of the war • Agreed to increase the bombing of Germany • Agreed to invade Italy, the “soft underbelly of Europe” instead of invading France. • USSR did not like this decision

Tehran • Late 1943 • FDR, Stalin and Churchill met to plan strategy. • USSR will launch full-scale assault on Germany when the Allies invaded France. • Agreed to break up Germany after the war • Talked about creating a new world organization after the war and possibility that USSR would enter the war against Japan after the defeat of Germany

  4. Cairo • Immediately after Tehran Conference • FDR and Churchill met to plan the invasion of France • Chose Eisenhower to lead the invasion and the codename of “Operation Overlord.”

Potsdam • July, 1945 • Truman, Stalin, Churchill, and Clement Atlee (who would be replacing Churchill) met to iron out details about the end of the war. • Stalin wanted reparations from Germany, but Truman wanted to allow German industry to recover. • Agreed to split Germany a little differently and to accept the German-Polish border established by the USSR. • Truman got the message that the atomic bomb test was successful while he was at this conference. • Increased tensions between western Allies and the USSR were evident at this conference.
