Japan left China at the end of WWII; Nationalists and Commies who were fighting together against Japan went back to fighting each other • 2. What was the outcome of the civil war in China? Chaing and his nationalist fled China and moved to Taiwan • 3. How did the outcome of the Chinese civil war affect American Politics? Conservatives claimed that commie agents were at work in the US government. The fear it caused led to another Red Scare. • 4. How did Korea become divided into two countries? Japanese north of the 38th Parrallel surrendered to the Soviets and in the south the surrendered to the US. • 5. How did the Korean War start? North Korea led a supprise attack into the south

  2. 18.2 Critical Thinking • 6. Why did the US go to the aid of South Korea? Truman wanted to show US military strength • 7. What did MacArthur’s counterattack at Ichon accomplish? Trapped North Korean troops and forced them flee back north • 8. What brought China into the war? Did not want Americans on their border and wanted a commie buffer country to protect Manchuria • 9. What caused the disagreement between MacArthur and Truman? MacArthur criticized Truman for not continuing north to take all of Korea and waging a full out war against China • 10. How did the Korean War end? Stalemate: Commies had been pushed back but Korea remained divided into two countries

The Cold War Heats Up • Draw 4 lines across the page so that you have 12 boxes • In the boxes on the left, write the following questions: • Which side did the US support, and why? • What did the US do to affect the outcome of the war? • What was the outcome of the war? • How did the American public react to that outcome and why? • In groups of 2, answer the questions for both columns

C: sent Nationalists billions of dollars in military equipment and supplies, tried to negotiate and end to the war K: provided naval & air support, sent troops, went to war • What was the outcome of the war? C: Commies won the war & forced Nationalists to flee to Taiwan K: stalemate, KOR remained divided, US lost 54,000 lives & $67 billion • How did the American public react to that outcome and why? C: shock, anger, & fear; Americans could not believe that containment had failed and demanded answers from gov’t K: dismay; high costs of unsuccessful war led Americans to reject Democratic party
