  5. What do you think makes a good lecturer?

  6. What makes a Good Lecturer? • On average, 64% of students said that they were satisfied with their lecturers. • The top three reasons were: • Presents the material in a clear and logical sense. • [The lecturer] is a good communicator and easy to understand. • Makes the material accessible, intelligible and meaningful.

  7. Enhancement not Replacement What students expect from their lectures is quite simple: They want relevant material communicated clearly to them. Therefore we’d like to think about ways we can enhance good practice, rather than replace it.

  8. Research method teaching 84% of students felt that their lecturer’s area of research of research had a positive impact on their lecture experience. 81% of students felt that there is a benefit to collaborative research between staff and students. Insert graph 56% of students said that they believed teaching staff should have a teaching qualification.

  9. Case Study Gaby Dale Leal International Representative (Education) 2012/13 Vice President Education – Elect 2013/14

  10. Employability Enhancement The student experience can be enhanced is by embedding employability skills into the material that is being taught. The majority of students felt that there was an opportunity to experience a practical delivery of their subject but felt more could be done more specifically about employability. “More trips in seminars to make use of London resources, whether libraries or historical sites that would bring literary context to life.” “How to "sell" one's geographical knowledge as useful in order to get a job.” “Visits to parliament would put things in context. I did this myself and things made so much more sense!”

  11. Case Study Simon Carr, Geography: In this module ‘Science and Politics of Climate change, he gives students an insight into how the ‘real world’ perceives climate change. Using assessment to equip students with employable skills, such as writing Parliament-style briefings and group presentations

  12. NUS – Lecture Capture Jess Poettcker Quality and Student Engagement Consultant (Technology Enhanced Learning)

  13. Technology: QReview When asked, only 55% of students knew what Qreview/lecture capture. Of those who were aware, only 31% of students had used it. However, students overwhelmingly said that having their lecture recorded would not have an impact on their attendance. 84% said that if their lectures were recorded, they would still go to them.

  14. Technology - HSS

  15. Technology – S&E

  16. Technology – SMD

  17. Podcasts and Electronic Voting Systems Our data shows that whilst students appreciate technology when used appropriately, it should only be used in a supplementary way. Students expressed that technology can be used beyond the lecture itself to enhance the student experience, for example as a revision technique. “It would be useful to have some type of recording of lectures as then for revision purposes this would be extremely helpful.” “OH GOD I HATE THAT STUPID CLICKER SO MUCH. I. FLAMES. FLAMES ON THE SIDE OF MY FACE. Seriously it is just a sad, strange, ill-judged interruption/bid to stay relevant. People/departments who want to use it are so off the mark they can't even see where the mark has gotten to.”

  18. Case Study Maren Thom - Languages, Linguistics and Film. Winner of the Innovative Teaching award. Uses music to teach students about different film genres.
