VOCABULARY REVIEW • strolled • Walked in a slow, relaxed way • pitiful • Something that causes you to feel sorry for it • sleepy • Ready to go to sleep • crouch • Close to the ground • official • If people in charge approve something, it is official • sleek • Healthy and well cared for • grace • Something that moves smoothly

STRATEGY: Monitor Comprehension • When you monitor comprehension, you stop to check your understanding before reading on • When something in the text confuses you, you use these strategies to figure it out: • Reread • Read ahead • Ask questions • Visualize • Adjust your reading rate • Ask for help

SKILL: Evaluate Author’s Purpose • Author’s write for 3 main reasons: • Entertain • Inform • Persuade • Identifying the author’s purpose, helps you figure out how you should read a selection. • Example: if you read nonfiction that contains a lot of details, you read slowly so you can understand and remember the information.

  6. PREVIEW & PREDICT When I say “Go”, take 1 minute to preview the illustrations. Ask yourself: • What do you think a mother tiger does? On your index card, write your predictions. After we listen to the selection, we will see if your questions were answered.
