    1. MIS334 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Dr Xiaoming Zheng Subject Coordinator

    2. Teaching Staff Xiaoming Zheng Email:xzheng@csu.edu.au Phone:69 332068 Building/Room number: Building 30/Room 270 Consultation Tuesday:11:00am-1:00pm Thursday: 10:00am-12:00noon Hans Swan: To be tabled. Guest Lecturer: To be tabled

    3. Textbook and study notes Hashemi, RH & Bradley, Jr, WG & Lisanti, CJ 2004, MRI The basics, 2nd edn, Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, Philadelphia. CSU MRI Study Notes. Lecturers notes.

    4. Assessment 1. Mid-session Test, 33% 2. Final Exam, 67%

    5. MRI Scanner

    6. Process of MR Imaging Put subject in big magnetic field (leave him there) Transmit radio waves into subject (about 3 ms) Turn off radio wave transmitter Receive radio waves re-transmitted by subject Manipulate re-transmission with magnetic fields during this readout interval (10-100 ms: MRI is not a snapshot) Store measured radio wave data vs. time Now go back to transmit radio waves into subject and get more data. Process raw data to reconstruct images Allow subject to leave scanner (this is optional)

    7. Topics Physical principles of MRI MRI instrumentation MRI pulse sequences - spin echo and an introduction to other sequences Spatial localization MR contrast weightings Factors affecting image quality MR safety Clinical MRI

    8. Schedule Week 1 (11 July) Introduction/MRI Physics Week 2 (18 July) MRI Physics Week 3 (25 July) MRI Physics Week 4 (1 August) MRI Physics Week 5 (8 August) MRI Physics/Instrumentation Week 6 (15 August) Pulse sequence/image generation/artefacts Week 7-10 ( 22 August-16 September) Clinical Placement Week 11 (19 September) Scanning parameters/Image quality Week 12 (26 September) Other pulse sequences/Safety in MRI Week 13 (3 October) Clinical MRI Week 14 (10 October) Clinical MRI Examination period (17 October 28 October 2011)

    9. Properties of Atomic Nuclei

    10. Proton Spins Without External Magnetic Field

    12. Protons Align With Magnetic Field

    13. Spectrum of Radio Frequencies

    14. Radio Frequency Stimulation

    15. T1 and T2 T1-Relaxation: Recovery Recovery of longitudinal orientation. T1 time refers to interval where 63% of longitudinal magnetization is recovered. T2-Relaxation: Dephasing Loss of transverse magnetization. T2 time refers to interval where only 37% of original transverse magnetization is present.

    17. MRI Scanner Components

    18. Types of Magnets

    19. Superconductor Magnet

    20. Gradient Coils

    21. Spatial Localisation Z gradient: Slice selection Y gradient: Phase encoding X gradient: Frequency encoding
