  1. Today’s Focus: Sorting and Classifying Using Common Attributes

  2. in the classroom? in your home? at Frenchtown? TURN & TALK What does it mean to SORT and CLASSIFY things? How are things sorted and classified …

  3. Why is sorting and classifying important? Sorting and classifying are very important life skills. Sorting is a basic thinking skill that helps people organize and understand their surroundings. In order to sort and classify a group of objects, one must recognize a common attribute. An attribute is a particular property which a group of objects have in common. For example, a student might sort and classify a group of buttons by the color, the size, or the shape of the buttons.

  4. TURN & TALK What are some mathematical terms for attributes? (for a group of objects have in common) Numbers: Shapes: Size: Sides: Lines: Angles: Color: odd/even, whole/decimals, multiples of…, prime, composite polygons , quadrilaterals, closed figures/open figures >, <, =, length, width, height, weight measurements number of sides, equilateral, isosceles, scalene parallel, perpendicular, congruent, horizontal, vertical right angle, acute angles, obtuse angles shaded, non-shaded, specific colors

  5. Group 1 Group 2 Your Task Today You and a partner will be sorting a variety of objects into two groups that have a common attribute. In group 1, we put …….. The attribute they have in common is ….. In group 2, we put …….. The attribute they have in common is …..

  6. Group 1 Group 2 MODEL - EXAMPLE #1 A B C D E F G H 5 3 8 6 4 2 1 7 G) 1, B) 3, A) 5, H) 7 F) 2, E) 4, D) 6, C) 8 In group 1, I put # 1, 3, 5, 7. The attribute they have in common is that they are all ODD numbers and cannot be divided by 2 equally. In group 2, I put #2, 4, 6, 8. The attribute they have in common is that they are all EVEN numbers andcan be divided by 2 equally.

  7. Is there more than one way to correctly sort and classify these objects into the two groups? YES! But always DEFEND YOUR THINKING!

  8. A A C C B B E E D D F F Group 1 Group 2 MODEL - EXAMPLE #2 In group 1, I put shapes A, B, & F. The attribute they have in common is they all have equilateral sides (same length sides). In group 2, I put shapes C, D, & E. The attribute they have in common is they do not have equilateral sides (only two sides are equal to each other)

  9. Is there more than one way to correctly sort and classify these objects into the two groups? YES! But always DEFEND YOUR THINKING!

  10. Group 1 Group 2 MODEL - EXAMPLE #3 F E A C B D In group 1, I put A and D. The attribute they have in common is they are both pennies, worth $0.01 each and made of copper. In group 2, I put B, C, E and F. The attribute they have in common is they are NOT pennies, each worth more than $0.01 and all made of silver.

  11. Group 1 Group 2 ON YOUR OWN - EXAMPLE #4 C B E G A D F In group 1, I put shapes B, D, and E. The attribute they have in common is that they all have right angles (90 degrees). In group 2, I put shapes A, C, F and G. The attribute they have in common is that NONE have right angles (90 degrees)

  12. Are you ready to sort and classify objects?
