  5. November 1799 • Directory – Not doing well • Napoleon urged to seize power in France • Troops surround nat’l legislature and drove out members • Remaining members dissolved Directory • Group of 3 Counsels  Napoleon becomes dictator

  6. 1799 - Coup d’etat • Seizure of Power • “Blow to state”

  7. 1802 • Europe at Peace – Napoleon can focus on France • Kept changes from Revolution

  8. Economy • Efficient Tax Collection • National Banking System

  9. Politics • End Corruption gov’t • Lycees – gov’t run public schools • Male Students • Positions based on merit

  10. Religion • Concordat (agreement) with Pope • Church has influence, but no control over nat’l affairs
