  1. Day 37 Refuting Counterclaims

  2. Teaching Point: • Today you are already familiar with your counterclaim. Today you will want to go back through your notes to find facts to support your counterclaim. The job of an argument essayist is to “up” one side and “down” the other. We must explore the other side thoroughly so we can convince our readers that the counterclaim is just not compelling enough.

  3. Example of a counterclaim may look like this including evidence: “Some people feel that sharks are blood thirsty predators.”

  4. Evidence: • About 30 species of sharks are known to attack humans. • Three species are very deadly (Great white, Bull Tiger • Some species can kill you in fresh water as well as salt. • We to make cages to keep them out in order to dive safely.

  5. Transitional Words: • Now that you have evidence for the counterclaim, we are going to find more evidence to discredit the counterclaim. I want to demonstrate for you that there are some transition words that will help refute the counterclaim. • Nevertheless • Still • Despite this/in spite of • However • But

  6. Example of disputing your counterclaim: • Counterclaim: Some people feel that sharks are blood thirsty predators. • Evidence: About 30 species of sharks are known to attacks humans however there are a total of 350 to 400 kinds of sharks! That means for the 30 species that may have attacked humans thereare at least 320 others that haven’t! Yet, may lump all sharks into the “bloodthirsty” image.

  7. Active Engagement/Independent Writing: • Review your counterclaims and find evidence in their notes to refute them.
