  1. B A Molecular magnet based single electron transistorsEnrique del Barco, University of Central Florida, DMR 0737802 The specific goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of molecular SETs for the study of the interplay between localized high-spin states of an individual SMM and conduction electrons in a three-terminal SET. For this, special attention has been put into nanoscale device fabrication and chemistry functionalization of the molecules to prevent the SMM for degradation when placed on the transistor. During the first year of the project, the effort has been exclusively dedicated to improve our ability to create molecular SETs, which allowed a more efficient study of the molecular magnets (see figures). 2. Molecular magnet based single electron transistorsEnrique del Barco, University of Central Florida, DMR 0737802 Two graduate students have been full time involved in different research activities during the first year of the project. John Henderson will base his PhD thesis entirely on this project, for which he has already passed his dissertation proposal in April 2008. Firoze Haque is preparing his Master Thesis dissertation proposal to be defended at the end of June, also entirely based on this project. One undergraduate student, Juan Carlos Gonzalez has been involved in this project during its first year. In addition, one high school student (Austin Coye) has started to work on this project in April 2008 and plans to be fully involved in the study of the transport properties of ferromagnetic gold nanoparticles. The research performed under this project has been already presented in different conferences worldwide by both the PI and the graduate students. Artistic representation of a nanoscale SMM-based SET Electrodes: Ph-D students John Henderson and Firoze Haque Research opportunities for k12 students are offered under this project in an interactive blog directed to attract high-school students to nanoscience research. Nanoscale transport represents a very attractive area in this regards.
