  3. Last week… Paul introduces the idea of our new identity providing the basis of change for the believer.

  4. Last week… Change for believers, as every Christian knows, is not automatic, as some have claimed.

  5. Romans 6:5-6 Paul is explaining our “walk in newness of life”.

  6. Romans 6:5-6 “United in the likeness…we shall also be united…” Not a discussion of our future resurrection.

  7. Romans 6:5-6 “United in the likeness…we shall also be united…” A discussion of our new life as a result of our union with Christ.

  8. Romans 6:5-6 “Likeness” “A state of having common experiences” BDAG p. 707

  9. Romans 6:5-6 “United in the likeness…we shall also be united…” We can expect to live as Christ lives!

  10. Romans 6:5-6 But, why should we expect that?

  11. Romans 6:5-6 Because of something we know about our union with Christ.

  12. Romans 6:5-6 Our “old self” died with Christ.

  13. Romans 6:5-6 It has been replaced by our new self. Eph. 4:20-24

  14. Romans 6:5-6 This occurs when we believe.

  15. Romans 6:5-6 We are born again or regenerated and are baptized by the Holy Spirit.

  16. Romans 6:5-6 That gives us a new inner person and unites us to the Body of Christ; in His death, burial, and resurrection.

  17. Romans 6:5-6 That whole “body of work”, body of sins we committed through our physical bodies, is in our past and it’s rule over us has been broken. Col. 2:11-15

  18. Romans 6:5-6 The goal is that we should no longer be enslaved to it.

  19. Romans 6:7 We are freed from sin in that it no longer has a claim to us in our inner self.

  20. Romans 6:8-9 Death with Christ leads to life with Christ.

  21. Romans 6:8-9 Our future experience with Christ in glory can become our present experience!

  22. Romans 6:8-9 Our future experience with Christ in glory can become our present experience! 1 Thess. 5:10; Rom. 8:11

  23. Romans 6:8-9 Our death with Christ leads to our life with Him!

  24. Romans 6:8-9 It is critical that we know this fundamental truth: “Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.”

  25. Romans 6:8-9 The life we share with Him is eternal life!

  26. Romans 6:8-9 This eternal life is the life we experience through our union with Him! Rom. 5:17; Gal. 2:20

  27. Romans 6:8-9 Death’s authority is broken. “Death reigned from Adam through Moses…” However…

  28. Romans 5:20b-21 “…Where sin abounded grace abounded much more,so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”.

  29. Romans 6:10-11 Christ no longer needs to deal with sin as He did on the cross.

  30. Romans 6:10-11 Christ no longer needs to deal with sin as He did on the cross. It has been permanently dealt with.

  31. Romans 6:10-11 Christ lives His life now “fully oriented to God”. (Hodges)

  32. Romans 6:10-11 That’s how ours should be!

  33. Romans 6:10-11 We are to live our lives with this Identification Truth that begins in 6:3.

  34. Romans 6:10-11 This is one of the first major actions believers need to make.

  35. Romans 6:10-11 The reality is that we are united to Jesus Christ, dead to sin and alive to God.

  36. Romans 6:10-11 Satan will go to great lengths to blur this reality and gets cooperation from our flesh and the world!

  37. Romans 6:10-11 “Consider” Same word as God “imputing” righteousness earlier (4:3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 22, 23, 24).

  38. Romans 6:10-11 We are to live our lives regarding ourselves the way God does; according to reality.

  39. Romans 6:10-11 But, the further reality is that we don’t have to live according to that reality.

  40. Romans 6:10-11 Anyone who says believers can’t and don’t live contrary to their new lives is not being honest with their own lives and the reality we all observe.

  41. Romans 6:10-11 Nothing could be farther from the truth than that godly living is automatic for believers.

  42. Romans 6:10-11 This problem is not solved by inserting ideas of godly living like “lifestyle” that are not, and cannot be, defined.

  43. Romans 6:10-11 Practically, this theology leads only to frustration and/or self-delusion.

  44. Romans 6:10-11 However, the reality is that, with the proper understanding, Christians can enjoy the victory Christ has brought!

  45. Romans 6:12-14 When we “consider” this spiritual reality true, it should result in behavior consistent with that reality!

  46. Romans 6:12-14 Before believing, we allowed sin to rule our lives by giving members of our body to a lifestyle consistent with it.

  47. Romans 6:12-14 Now, we should give those same members to the goals and activities consistent with godly living.

  48. Romans 6:12-14 “Present” or “turn over” = To “put at one’s disposal”.

  49. Romans 6:12-14 “Present” or “turn over” = Something made available for a purpose.

  50. Romans 6:12-14 Our commitment to new life should be intentional!
