  1. Romans 8:18-25

“The Normal Christian Life” Pt. 3: RESTORATION
  2. Romans 8 18 ”For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.”
  3. The “I’ll Fly Away Narrative” The typical Christian doesn’t know what to make of this passage...why? Most have an IMBEDDED or FUNCTIONAL theology of EVACUATION The story goes something like this… Creation and material reality is bad, one day God will destroy it all, then take us to HEAVEN What is that? Not Hell…
  4. Three Tiered Universe Heaven? Earth Hell?
  5. Two Ages Old aeon (age) New aeon (age)
  6. Typical Assumptions Of Heaven And Plato Earth
  7. God’s Movement In Scripture Earth
  8. Clues In The Text Verse 19-22 “Futility” (Romans 1) Can’t fulfill its purpose or become what its meant to be! Endless cycle of death, decay, and becoming LESS “Set free” for “freedom” A mercy killing? If so, why the BIRTH metaphor?
  9. What About Us? Verse 19 “Eager longing” Literally means “stretching the head” or “stretching the neck” Creation is WAITING Genesis 9:13 God makes a COVENANT “Sons of God”—the ones God has called out, to be REVEALED (V.18 & 19)…

  16. The RESTORATION Business Verse 23-25 Something is being born! We GROAN too because we aren’t what we were meant to be! First fruits (Ex. 23:16, Lev. 2:12-14, Deut. 26:10) God REVERSES the practice! Communication and relationship restored! Heaven is not NON-EARTH, but NEW EARTH Same with us! God is making all things NEW and MORE! Randy Alcorn quotes
  17. Supposedly Problematic Texts Phil 3:20 Interpreted the opposite of how it is meant 1 Thess. 4:16-17 Welcoming the KING home! 2 Peter 3:10 Compare to Proverbs 25:3-5 John Piper quote
  18. A Few Supportive Texts Matt. 5:5, Matt. 6:10 At the heart of Jesus’ prayer Col. 1:19-20 “ALL THINGS” Isaiah 65:17-25, 66: 22-33 “Not remembered” Revelation 21 & 22 “Coming DOWN like a BRIDE” Your view of the future affects the present…
  19. Implications Has modern Christianity taught us to want heaven or God? CS Lewis In “Surprised By Joy” Do we want HEAVEN or God? Lots of people want HEAVEN because there’s no suffering… But what did Jesus do? Undercuts the GOSPEL that GOD comes to us, not we GO to GOD Paradigm for COURAGE
  20. Implications Evacuation Theology vs. Secular Humanism vs. Biblical Christianity Why do good? Care for creation? Everything is meaningless anyway, the universe is destined to freeze or burn up David Berlinski New Creation Theology says all that is good will go on…
  21. Tim Keller “Christians have a rather unique attitude to nature and the material world. Some people see the material world as inherently evil in itself. Such a view is a form of asceticism. (Many Christians have this view.) In this view it is considered spiritual to avoid physical pleasures and to withdraw from the world. Moreover, art and culture-building are often denigrated. But other people see the material world as all there is. Such a view is materialism. In this view one lives for “creature comforts,” physical pleasure and beauty. Art and culture-building are virtually worshipped. This view has no way to critique nature or the world. But Christians are to see the material world as inherently good, yet fallen. And it is clear that our future is a physical one! God made both the physical and the spiritual, and he is going to redeem both. Many modern thinkerswant to see decay and death as completely “natural,” and much scientific research tries to define the “normal” as the “right.” Christians know that the world is not yet what God wants it to be and that our “normal” is not God’s.”
  22. Implications The Scapegoat We run away from, push out, marginalize, and demonize those who hurt us or offend us Identity is formed by who you hate or avoid God takes the opposite approach and goes as far as to go to the outside for us Evacuation theology takes a passive and unloving approach to evil It causes WITHDRAWL from the world instead of SERVICE TO the world
