  1. Participant Instructions Measures and Models of Aviation Display Clutter [ Year 2 Experiment ] June, 2008 NASA LaRC | NC State University | APTIMA

  2. Research Objectives To assess the affect of different head-up display (HUD) features in various phases of flight on pilot mental workload and perceptions of display clutter.

  3. Overall Process Briefing Training Test Trials Debriefing Introduction Equipment Familiarization Six Trials Re-ranking of Workload & Perceived Clutter Dimensions Informed Consent Three Legs per Trial Flight Scenario Alternative Terms Selection Ratings of Workload & Perceived Clutter Dimensions Demographic Survey Ranking of Workload & Perceived Clutter Dimensions Open Questions

  4. Briefing Training Test Trials Debriefing Introduction - Greeting - Research Overview Completion of Forms - “Informed Consent Form” - “Demographic Questionnaire”

  5. Briefing Training Test Trials Debriefing Equipment Familiarization • Integrated Flight Deck (IFD) Simulator with Head-up Display (HUD) • Boeing B757-200 Training • HUD feature configurations include SVS, EVS and/or Tunnel • Instructions on flight scenario (approach and landing at 16R, KRNO) • Practice session in IFD Completion of Ranking Forms • Complete “NASA-TLX (Task Load Index) Workload Demand Ranking Form”. • Complete “Subjective Clutter Descriptor Ranking Form”.

  6. Briefing Training Test Trials Debriefing Flying the aircraft simulator with a HUD - Follow narrative of flight scenario for landing airplane at airport, including status, clearance from ATC, and required actions - View sequence of 16 different configurations of head-up display (HUD) components - Provide feedback on list of semantic pairs and overall display “clutter” for each display image by using rating questionnaires (paper and pencil). • Approach and landing at 16R, KRNO. • Each trial consists of three sequential legs. • In each leg, different HUD configurations will be presented. • At the end of each leg, you will complete the “NASA-TLX Workload Rating Form” and “Subjective Clutter Rating Form”. Trial #1 Trial #2 Trial #3 Trial #4 Trial #5 Trial #6 There will be 6 trials with different orders of presentation of HUD configurations.

  7. Briefing Training Test Trials Debriefing Completion of Post-experiment Ranking Forms • Complete “NASA-TLX (Task Load Index) Workload Demand Ranking Form”. • Complete “Subjective Clutter Descriptor Ranking Form”. • Select from alternative clutter descriptor terms. Debriefing - Answer open questions on the definition of display clutter. - Provide subjective comments on the experiment.
