The PR Insider • Communications Director: Chelsea Kitta. 3rd year Journalism major w/ PR concentration • Minor in Ag Coms • Produces Facebook, Twitter & blog content, Social Media and Marketing Director for INTERO Real Estate, Multimedia/videos for local businesses, College of Liberal Arts Ambassador

  8. What is Public Relations? • The earliest definitions emphasized press agentry and publicity, while more modern definitions incorporate the concepts of “engagement” and “relationship building.” • “Public relations helps an organization and its publics
adapt mutually to each other.” –PRSA widely accepted definition

Facts about Public Relations • A strong, growing career field- employment growth 18%+ through 2016 as projected by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2009) • More than 250,000 PR jobs in the U.S. – and thousands more not specifically identified with the term “public relations” • Examples: media buyer, media planner, event planner, blogger, social media specialist, integrated marketing communication, promotional products rep, etc. • Grads get jobs! PR students have the highest level of post-Bachelor’s degree employment of all graduates from the communication disciplines (University of Georgia, 2007)

  10. Who Benefits from PR Experience • The most economical way by far to reach mass audiences • Stimulates awareness of and demand for your company’s products or services • Everyone can benefit from PR experience. Knowing how to effectively communicate a client’s needs/message is vital!
