  2. Assessment Overview In groups of two or more, students will be able to explore improvisation skills with teacher guidance and apply improvisation skills in response to stimuli to produce a piece of improvisation of at least 3 minutes

  3. Workshop • Despite common belief, improvisation is NOT easy. • You must be: • A fast thinker • Creative • Unique • Good with words.

  4. Step 1 • Character development: • What are the clichés which define a character quickly? • What do they look, sound, act like? • How can we avoid them? • Create your own character on your wikipage and use as much detail as possible – names, ages, likes, dislikes etc

  5. Step 2 • Storytellers make the best improv. Actors • Can you tell a story and make it believable? • Can you keep it going and keep it interesting? • Can you help other characters develop in your story? • All of this adds up to great improv actors. Add that to your character development and suddenly you have show.

  6. Games • Have a go at some of the following games to develop your ability to think fast: • Alphabet game • Emotional hitchhiker • Scene three ways • Movie genres • Interviewer

Task We will have several opportunities to sit this assessment and they will each require to you to respond to a stimulus. • You can select a prop from the box… • Newspaper headline. • Video clip. Each scene will be filmed for assessment and at the completion of the task you will be allowed to select what you feel is your best work for assessment.

Achievement Criteria • element 1 • Explore improvisation skills with teacher guidance. • performance criteria • 1.1 Exploration identifies improvisation characteristics. • Students can identify the elements of effective improvisation including use of offers, acceptance and extension. • 1.2 Exploration demonstrates spontaneity. • Student demonstrates use of imagination, concentration, offering and accepting vocally and physically. • 1.3 Exploration demonstrates narrative skills. • Student can create a cohesive narrative in improvisation. - advancing, extending, storytelling. • 1.4 Exploration demonstrates sensitivity to others in the group. • Student can work co-operatively with a group. • element 2 • Apply improvisation skills in response to stimuli to create a piece of improvisation for performance. • Students are given a poem, picture, news article or prop and can use it to create an improvisation. • performance criteria • 2.1 Improvisation demonstrates spontaneity • Students create the improvisation with minimal time for preparation. • Students show use of imagination, concentration, offering and accepting vocally and physically. • 2.2 Improvisation demonstrates narrative skills. • Students demonstrate the use of narrative skills, advancing, extending, storytelling. • 2.3 Improvisation demonstrates sensitivity to others in the group. • Students can work co-operativel with a group. • 2.4 Application combines improvisation characteristics.
