  2. Session Objectives • Know key features which can be used to evaluate websites, • Understand what makes a good website and what makes a bad one, • Revise the concept of audience and purpose, • Create a list of criteria which can be used to evaluate websites fairly.

  3. What Makes A Good Website

Audience and Purpose • A website must have an purpose. • If there is no purpose then its not required. • A website also will have an audience – who is the site intended for? • A bad web site is certainly one which is written without the audience in mind. • Knowing what the audience and purpose of a website is prior to evaluation will assist us.

Evaluating Websites • There are millions of websites some good some bad. • Anybody can publish a website on the internet, • A website may not be checked by an editor and may not contain fact, • When evaluating a website its often judged on: • Its content, • The credibility of the author, • Functionality of the site.

  6. What Makes A Good Website(1) • Site has clear purpose, • Site is designed for its target audience, • Content you learn something from, • Content is reliable and not too biased, • Tasteful style, • Consistent style, • Quick to download, • Updated regularly, • Know who the author is,

  7. What Makes A Good Website(2) • Good links to related sites, • Not too many adverts, • Has interactivity, • Dynamic content, • Site is complete, fully tested and working.

Website Standards • The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops specifications, guidelines, software, and tools to lead the Web to its full potential, • They have developed a set of guidelines which aim to make websites as accessible as possible, • When evaluating and commenting on websites its always best to apply these standards to the websites before making comment.

WCAG • These are guidelines which allow people with disabilities to access websites, • 12 directions are spilt into 4 categories – • Perceivable • Operable • Understandable • Robust • This video will help you understand the criteria, • Judging websites against the criteria will give your evaluations more weight.

Session Tasks • Visit the further reading links on slide 12, • Complete Task 1 Part 3 of the assignment. • Choose 2 of the websites found and complete a formal evaluation of these. • Evaluate both the design (fonts, colours, content) and structure (how the pages physically link and is the expected content where you think it is) • Use your own criteria and WCAG criteria to make suitable comments
