  5. Enetophobia: fear of needles

  6. Note! Hydrophobia can also mean Rabies – the disease that sends sufferers mad. It is called Hydrophbobia because a person or animal with it will show a fear of water. Hydrophobia: fear of water

  7. Acrophobia: fear of heights Note! If you feel dizzy while looking down from a high place it is called vertigo (from the Latin word for whirling)

  8. Odontiphobia: fear of dentists

  9. Arithmophobia: fear of numbers

  10. Arachibutyrophobia: fear of getting peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth

  11. Why do We Fear? • Your surroundings become unknown • There is anticipation (What will happen?) • There is the known (You have seen this happen before! It is going to be painful) • Past experiences (everyone’s different)

  12. What happens? • Flood of adrenaline into the body • Heart rate and blood pressure increases • Pupils dilate to take in as much light as possible • Veins in skin constrict to send more blood to major muscle groups • Muscles tense up • Nonessential systems shut down

  13. Other Fears • Enetophobia – fear of dentists • -Hypnophobia – fear of sleep • -Androphobia – fear of men • -Thanatophobia – fear of death • -Heliophobia – fear of sunlight • Mysophobia – fear of germs • Halitophobia – fear of bad breath
