  8. The Fundamentals • At its essence, rhetoric may be defined as the study of how language—broadly defined as any sign system—is used to persuade.

Applications of Rhetoric • Rhetoric helps us identify with those both within and outside of our communities • Likewise, rhetoric may divide us from those same groups • Analyzing the use of language helps us become better communicators and teachers • Analyzing others’ texts allows us to locate, critique, maintain, and challenge systems of power
