Temperate forests are often found in eastern North America , northeastern Asia, and western and central Europe and on the southern tips of South America and Australia .
The temperate forests around the world usually receive 75-150 cm annually.
Moderate climates and fertile sol provide a growing season of 140-200 days during 4-6 frost-free months , or 20-28 weeks.
On average, temperatures throughout the year range from around 20-25 degrees Celsius. Between the three coolest and three warmest months temperatures differ by no more than 5 degrees.
The first forests were dominated by giant horsetails and ferns that stood 40 feet tall
They contain about 70 percent of carbon present in living things
Temperate forests occupy about one third of the Earth’s land area
Forests have been worshipped in ancient religions
A temperate forest in California is home to the world’s largest tree, a sequoia, measuring 275 feet tall and 95 feet around
The largest temperate forest, in Scandinavia and northern Russia, has over 3.5 million miles of land covered in trees
Temperate forests are now becoming casual to civilization as deforestation increases
The two distinctive seasons are rainy and dry
Temperate forests are layered with plant and animal life with a canopy of taller trees and smaller shrubs and ferns on bottom
The temperate forest in North America is home to the Appalachian mountains
