  3. Today • commercial networks available • networking services are a commodity • (usually)significant gap between AC and other communities • primary and secondary education • (public) libraries • cultural institutions

The Role of Academic Community • is the Academic Community • autistic ? • science because of science • self-sufficient • “outside” of society • and its needs and problems • or • the leader in development (of society) ? • (deeply) engaged • in needs and problems of the society • proactive • a paradigm and a test-bed • for future changes in society • in service of science or in service of society

  7. The Role of IT in AC • is Information Technology (in AC) • a support system ? • for traditional activities • an infrastructure ? • essential for new way of academic work and life • a tool ? • to achieve main goals

  8. The Role of a NREN • is a NREN • a support organization ? • acts on request (from members of AC) • a coordinator ? • acts jointly (with members of AC) • a leader ? • acts as an initiator • of programs, projects • acts as an awareness agent • in academic community • in the society as a whole

  9. The Domain of a NREN • academic community only ? • the whole educational community ? • the whole non-profit area ? • public libraries • NGOs • the whole public services ? • government services • judicial system • semi-commercial services ? • public health system

Why To Extend The Domain • other domains • do have an (urgent ?) need • do not have organization like NREN • could public interest be trusted to for-profit organizations ? • NREN does have • accumulated knowledge and experience • a network of partners and suppliers • an active user base (academic community) • both are financed from the (same) budget
