Project Summary • National per capita fish consumption rate: • Prepared = 4.58 grams/person/day • Uncooked = 6.30 grams/person/day • Recommended “safe” fish ingestion rate is only 32 grams/person/day • Find Sugpiaq tribal members’ present consumption rates patterns, habits, preparation and cooking methods of fish and other subsistence resources in five villages (Ouzinkie, Old Harbor, Akhiok, Larsen Bay and Port Lions) and the City of Kodiak • Sun’aq is developing forms and a questionnaire

Why Participate? • Sugpiaq tribal members fish consumption rate is believed to be dramatically higher than the national rates • Increase the health of tribal and community members • Increase knowledge of contaminants in subsistence foods and risks associated with consumption • Increase staff skills in technical assessments and data collection

  4. Proposed Assessment Methods in each community • Hire one or two tribal interviewers in each village • Tribal council and interviewers to identify 10% of & schedule interviews with households • Compile interview forms • Send data to partner data analyst • Hold teleconference with tribal council partners to share findings • Develop draft report, submit to EPA and village tribal partners • Produce final report following tribal feedback

Tribal Interviewer Training & Tasks • After hiring one or two tribal members in each village to assist with scheduling and conducting interview, we will provide the following training • Orientation to forms and assessment procedures • Council & interviewers review tribal member list to select 10% of households • Compile data for final report • Submit to EPA
