FM Hiring Process…Pre 5CC • New FM Hiring Matrix – 4+ years ago • CFAs discussed and made recommendations • Approved by: FM, ASD, 309th, 75th ABW • Briefed the Matrix to all FM personnel • Results were beginning to show… • Individual matrix scores were increasing • More FM folks getting degrees, APDP, training, PME, certifications, etc. • Updated the FM Hiring Matrix – this Fall • CFAs reviewed and made changes • Approved by: FM, ASD, 309th, 75th ABW, ICBM, GLSC • In the process of making changes… • However…5 Center Construct changed everything Be America’s Best

Be America’s Best

FM Hiring Process…??? • We are working these issues: • AFLCMC and AFSC – promising a Hiring Matrix IPT • AFNWC • GLSC • Munitions & Space • Specialized Mgt • Tenants • FM Goal: • One Hiring process – uphill battle • Ensure all FM personnel are treated fairly & equitably • In Reality – FM Goal: • Make all Hiring processes as consistent and standard as possible • Ensure all FM personnel are prepared to compete Be America’s Best

The Interview… • Prepare, Prepare, Prepare • Read the Job announcement • Know the KSAs – knowledge, skills, abilities • Read and understand the PD – ask for a copy • Know the Duties of the Job • Do your homework – on the position • Know “the rules” of the Interview • How many and who will sit on the board? • How long is the interview? • How much time will you have to prepare? • Is the interview interactive or not? • Identify possible questions – what could they ask me? • Know your resume – inside and out… Be America’s Best

Know your Resume… • Take your resume and break it down • Categorize the specific Tasks you accomplished • Technical expertise • Problem solving • Leadership skills • Process Improvement • Communications • Breakdown/Describe each Task as a scenario • Situation/Problem • Behavior/Action taken • Results/Outcome – be specific • Put them in a book – bring them to the interview Be America’s Best

  14. Sample Questions… Question: Effective financial management is an important part of a supervisor’s responsibility. Tell me about a specific situation in which you displayed your LEADERSHIP. (situation/problem) Probing Question (a): What actions, behaviors, or methods did you use in the given situation? (behavior/action) Probing Question (b): What impact did your actions and/or behaviors have on the situation? (results/outcome)

Interview Tips… • Prepare, Prepare, Prepare • Dress appropriately and arrive a little early • Try to relax…eat on time, drink some water • Treat this like a game… • Time management • Prepare quickly for each question – write stuff down (3-5 min. per) • In Interview - allocate time for each question (3-5 min. per) • Ask for a 2 min. warning • Answer the questions…PLEASE • Be sure to answer each part of the question • Then, if time…add in related scenarios that you prepared • Toot your own horn - use “I” rather than “we” • End STRONG – “Why hire me” (last 2 min.) • Thanks for the interview, technical expertise, leadership, hard worker, problem solver, play well with others, etc.

  16. Common Mistakes • Not answering the questions • Getting side-tracked • Not getting to all the questions (time management) • Elaborating too much • Speaking ill of past supervisors/employers • Not preparing • Using the term “we” instead of “I” • You are interviewing, not your team • Others ??
