  2. What is my role as a Faculty Senator?

  3. Role of Faculty Senator • Represent your department/unit by attending each Faculty Senate meeting. • After meetings, share information with your department/unit at faculty meetings. • Participate in shared governance by serving on Senate committees and encourage colleagues to do the same.

  4. Key areas for review: • Faculty Senate • Board of Curators • Inter-campus Faculty Council (IFC) • General Officers • Senate Executive Committee

  5. Faculty Senate Bi-weekly meetings are held throughout the year beginning in September and ending in April. Each Spring election of officers is conducted and vote taken on members to fill the Senate committees in the following year.

Faculty Senate • Faculty Senate: • The voting members of the Senate consist of: • UM System President Tim Wolfe • Elected full-time tenured, tenure-track and non-tenure track representatives from units specified by Senate by-laws • The non-voting invited members consist of: • Chancellor Leo Morton • Provost Gail Hackett

Board of Curators: The governing body of the University of Missouri consists of nine members, who are appointed by the governor, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate; provided, that at least one but no more than two shall be appointed from each congressional district, and no person shall be appointed a curator who shall not be a citizen of the United States, and who shall not have been a resident of the state of Missouri two years prior to his appointment. Not more than five curators shall belong to any one political party. The term of service of the curators shall be six years, the terms of three expiring every two years.

IFC (Intercampus Faculty Council) The Intercampus Faculty Council (IFC) consists of three representatives from each campus of the University system and addresses matters that transcend any one campus. IFC normally meets monthly in a day-long session that typically includes an hour meeting with the President of the University System. There are occasionally additional meetings and some are by Telepresence. Two of the UMKC IFC representatives are elected at the Spring Faculty Meeting to serve three-year staggered terms so that no more than one of the two elected members will be replaced or re-elected in the same year. The Chair of the Faculty Senate serves as the third IFC member. The current UMKC IFC representatives are: Gary Ebersole (Senate Chair) Carole McArthur Nancy Stancel

  11. Senate Executive Committee: The Senate Steering Committee consists of the Senate Chairperson, Senate Secretary, and the two IFC members. The Steering Committee meets a week before each senate meeting to discuss potential topics or concerns that should be addressed at the upcoming senate meetings. It also serves as a “first responder” to emerging issues that affect the welfare of faculty. The current members of the Senate Executive Committee are: Gary Ebersole, Senate Chair Peggy Ward-Smith, Vice Chair Cathleen Burnett, Senate Secretary Carole McArthur, IFC rep Nancy Stancel, IFC rep

  12. Senate Committees: How do I get chosen for a committee? 1.) In March, the nominations sub-committee preference polls are e-mailed to faculty members so that they can select the committees on which they would like to participate. 2.) The results of the preference polls are provided to the members of the Nominations Committee, who represent each of the units represented in the Senate. 3.) The Nominations Committee makes recommendations on who should fill the committee vacancies. Their recommendations are listed on ballots. 4.) The Faculty Senate votes on the ballots by the end of the Spring semester.
