  5. Using reasonable excuse or explanation for behavior to avoid real reason or true motivation. Ex: Pt says, “I can’t take time off from my job” in order to avoid taking tests due to fear

  6. Projection

  7. Placing blame Ex: “The teacher failed me because she doesn’t like me” rather than, “I failed because I didn’t do the work”

  8. Displacement

  9. Transferring feelings about one person to someone else Ex: Man goes home from work and yells at his wife and kids because he’s mad at his boss.

  10. Compensation

  11. Substitute one goal for another to achieve success Ex: Julie wants to be doctor but doesn’t have enough money for medical education so she becomes a P.A.

  12. Daydreaming

  13. Dream-like process while awake; means of escape from reality ex: You hate Calculus class so you spend that time daydreaming about shopping or surfing.

  14. Repression

  15. Transfer of unacceptable or painful ideas, feelings or thoughts into the unconscious mind. Individual is not aware of this occurring. ex: fear of heights-may have stemmed from frightful experience in childhood.

  16. Suppression

  17. Aware of unacceptable feelings or thoughts and refuse to deal with them. Ex: Pt has a breast lump and doesn’t want to think about it so she works constantly.

  18. Denial

  19. Disbelief of an event or idea that is too shocking for a person to cope with. Ex: Terminal illness diagnosis.

  22. When you remove yourself from a situation or stop communicating Ex: Having to work with someone you dislike
