  1. ‘ Sex should only take place between a married couple.’Do you agree? Bullet point 3 reasons for each viewpoint. Refer to Christian teaching in your answer. For the statement • The main purpose of sex, is for children - marriage provides a faithful, loving, stable environment to bring up a family • Sex should be the greatest sign of love & commitment between a couple and, as a result, deserves to be kept special. • 6th Commandment – do not commit adultery; Adultery destroys the trust of marriage, is & lustful. • Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit – do not sin against your body by casual sex/ sexual immorality • Casual sex can lead to being used, rejected, unwanted pregnancy and higher risk of STDs. Alternative views • Now people just want the pleasure of sex without commitment. You should be free to have sex if you both want it. • People want to know if they are sexually compatible before they get married (try-before-you-buy syndrome). • More people feel they do not have to get married, they can just live together & this is acceptable. Just because you aren’t married doesn’t mean that you cannot be in a stable, committed and loving relationship. • Modern society/ the media gives the impression that casual sexual activity for pleasure is acceptable, even normal.

  2. Why do marriages breakdown? Go around the room, and make notes on 5 reasons why. Pick out 2 things. Explain how the marriage vows could help prevent marriage from breaking down for these reasons. **Do you think that marriage can make a difference and help a couple to stay together? The UK has the 4th highest rates of family breakdown in the Western world, with 1 in 3 children living with a single parent.

Other views • reduces the risk of unwanted pregnancy • fairer on existing children as economically it is more difficult to support a larger family • reduces the risk of sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS • Non-Catholic Christians say it is ok if both parties agree • is an effective method of population control especially in poor countries
