TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITYDEPARTMENT OF MUSICCalendar Of EventsFALL 2014 Brazilian Jazz Exchange Residency Co-sponsored by Texas Southern University COLABS and Department of Music, NOLA Arts House Music and New Orleans Center for the Gulf South at Tulane University September 10th– 10:00a.m. Lecture/ Panel RhinehartAuditorium A discussion of the Brazil Arts and Cultural Exchange 2014 and its importance will be held before an audience consisting of TSU students and faculty.  Guest Brazilian musicians and scholars will discuss the Exchange program, Brazilian music styles, and cultural influences. September 11th – 11:00 a.m. MasterclassRhinehartAuditorium American Jazz and Brazilian Jazz styles will be explored. Led by and Horace Alexander Young, TSU students will participate in a guided session with Brazilian musicians,  Hotencio Silva, Fabricio Anderson, Lemos de Sousa, Ferriera de Oliveira, Marco Queiroz, in an open session designed to acquaint students on the stylistic influences of both Brazilian and American Jazz and how they intersect. September 12th - 5:00 p.m. Brazilian Jazz Jam on the Plaza RSC Music Plaza Guest Brazilian Jazz Musicians and TSU students and faculty will participate in an outdoor festival featuring music, jazz and dancing. Churrasco’s Brazilian food truck will be on site to offer Brazilian cuisine to compliment the occasion. ******* October 17th - 2:00 p.m. Jolie RockeBrownRhinehart Auditorium Lecture / Recital “From the gospel church to the opera stage…stopped at the club on the way” Soprano, Jolie Rocke Brown talks about her life as a singer. She enjoys a multi-faceted professional performing career in which she sings across several genres including opera, black gospel, jazz and R&B. October 21st - 1:00 p.m. Faculty Showcase ConcertRhinehartAuditorium Jane Perkyns, Darryl Singleton, Lucian Zidaru and others Music department faculty members share the stage in a program of classical works. October 24th-2:00 p.m. Eunbi KimRhinehartAuditorium Music Entrepreneurship The New York City-based pianist produces modern interdisciplinary concert experiences. Collaborating with other art forms, she presents classical and contemporary music in unique settings. Taking a break from a presentation at the Asia Society, Kim talks to our students about forging careers in music through personal entrepreneurship. November 9th- 4:00 p.m. KaremSimon, ClarinetRhinehartAuditorium Historias y Danzasby Colorado composer James David (world premiere) Canadian clarinetist, Dr. Karem Simon, will present a program of 20th and 21st century works for solo clarinet and piano.  An active soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, and conductor, Simon is dedicated to the commissioning of new works for the clarinet.  He will be assisted by Dr. Jane Perkyns on the piano November 16th- 4:00p.m. University Choir Riverside UMC 4920 Cullen Blvd, 77004 November 25th - 4:00p.m. Opera WorkshopRhinehartAuditorium The Thin Line Between Love and Hate Texas Southern University student soloists perform a concert of staged opera scenes exploring the two extremes of emotion…Love and Hate.
