  3. History • Founded: September 14, 1927 • Founded By: Houston Public School Board • The school started out as Houston College for Negroes. On June 1st 1951 the school named was changed to Texas Southern University. The students that attended petitioned the legislature for the phrase “Negroes” to be removed from the name of the school.

  6. Requirements • Completed application • $42.00 application fee • Official High School transcript • Grade point average of 2.50 on a 4.00 • Official SAT and ACT test scores • ACT 17 or 820 • Complete placement testing upon admission

Financial Aid • Eligible Student: • SAT score of 1200 or higher; or composite ACT score of 19 or higher. • Minimum high school cumulative GPA of 3.00. • Must be a citizen of the U.S. or a permanent resident. • Filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). • Demonstrate financial need. • Priority Deadline: April 30th • Scholarship Range: $4000 - $6000

  11. Career Services • TSU Human Resources help students find their desired jobs on and off campus. Males between the age of 18 and 25 must be registered with the selective service system to be eligible for employment. They also provide the Texas Job Fair for the students to broaden their job opportunities.

Campus Living • Lanier East & West Hall are available for all TSU students as far as living arrangements go. • The residence halls housing requires a fall & spring semester lease. • A roommate profile is included with the housing application. • Students will receive information about what is allowed and not allowed in Residence Hall with their confirmation letter in the official Welcome Brochure. • Chase ATM is available for all students. • Any student under the age of 21 is prohibited of alcoholic beverages on the campus of Texas Southern University or at University- sponsored activities. • Drugs are prohibited period to any student on campus.
